| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review It was always going to be a risk for the BBC to revamp Doctor Who--few television programmes inspire as much rabid and cultish adoration. With the 2005 series, however, the BBC have really outdone themselves. Their updated Doctor Who is a revelation: a cult science fiction series that has real mass appeal, and works for both children and their parents. Christopher Eccleston is an inspired and charismatic Doctor--he leaps around the sets with an unrestrained glee, like he's a child running amok in a toy shop. His enthusiasm in downright infectious. His sidekick Rose (Billie Piper) adds a real human touch, particularly as she gradually and believably matures from in-over-her-head city kid to tough-minded interplanetary hero. Much of the credit must go to writer Russell Davies, who has a much-practiced knack for finding popular appeal without dumbing-down his ideas, and who appears to have let his imagination run riot. Even the special effects, whilst not of a big-budget cinematic quality, still manage to strike a balance between cheesiness and realism. Thrilling, funny and thoroughly entertaining, this Doctor Who is a hero for the new millennium. --Robert Burrow

Leather and sonic... August 29, 2010 Joel Clark Series 1 of the new who has mixed reviews from me. I didnt like the cut down of multiple episodes to a quick 45 min episode of events.
Christopher Eccles is a great doctor, but i hated his costume.
Whoever came up with the idea of throwing him into a black jacket must've never seen doctor who in there lives. Doctor who is noticable for the catchy outfits not a old leather jacket. Also the return of the sonic scredriver would've been brill if the doctor didnt use it for everything. The series had some brill moment and episodes with some great guest actors (zoe wannamaker, simon pegg)
If your goin to start your collection with the new series rather then the classic series if start with series 2 as the episode are better and more darker.
another piece of Gold August 24, 2010 Thereviewer The fith boxset of Doctor who ive purchased(and not the last) for when i orrigionally brought them i brought them individually but i enjoy the special features just as much and believe me this is full of them all the episodes of series 1 in an excellent packkaging
Still my favourite doctor August 18, 2010 Pippin We're on series 5 now, my kids love Matt Smith (acting the part of David Tennant), and David Tennant is of course beautiful... but I still think Christopher Eccleston is the best: funny, sad, kind, wacky, angry, messianic. I bought these one at a time as they came out, mainly because I kept having to miss episodes because they were too scary for my children.
The whole reinvented show was brilliant, still is of course, and the two episodes set in WW2 - the Empty Child and The Doctor Dances - remain favourites. I can't watch them that often though, as they are STILL to scary for my now-much-bigger kids. At the time, they wouldn't go into a room if there was a tiny picture of a gas mask visible. They won't watch Blink either, from series 2. Good old Stephen Moffat! Though of course these episodes have some frivolity with meeting Captain Jack for the first time.
I also really love the last episode, again really sad. I was biased in favour of Christopher Eccleston at start, one of my favourite actors, but apprehensive about Bille Piper. Of course I was wrong, and it's in this first series that in some ways the best story is Rose's transformation as it goes on. The dialogue in the cafe near the start of the last episode before she goes to save the world - "and I'm supposed sit here and eat chips??!!" - is one I've used with my Sunday School class. Then she goes on to be so cool in series 2.
If you haven't seen this series, then enjoy!
a triumphant return for the Doctor August 3, 2010 Llamafarmer89 Christopher Eccleston was my first Doctor, I was probably about 15 years old when they brought Doctor Who back onto our screens. Eccleston's Doctor was only with us for one series, but what a series that was, every episode is a finely crafted piece of science fiction drama. My particular favourite episode is The Empty Child, which is genuinely frightening & interesting (even to someone like me who was raised on gore filled horror movies and sci-fi) I respect Russell T Davis as a writer/producer because he brings so much emotional depth to the characters. I also feel that he thoroughly understands the Doctor Who franchise.
Along with series 2 and 3, this is my favourite series of Doctor Who
Great little series July 27, 2010 mrscaldwell Not much to say, except a great series at a brilliant price. Well done Amazon
